We've been on Ko Lanta for a couple of days now. The boat ride from Krabi was very interesting. The boat was full of the "backpacker" crowd. Angie and I were feeling a bit "old" for the group but on the other hand it was pretty fun to be with a group who looked to be very easy going regarding their travel plans. The first stop for the boat was a very remote looking island called Ko Jum. This island didn't have a dock so the boat just waited out in the water offshore while some long-boats came out to retrieve the folks debarking.
Our first couple of nights on Ko Lanta were in a hotel on the beach which was not quite what the travel agent made it up to be. The bathroom (toilet and shower) were in a semi open area behind the room. It did have a roof and walls but there were quite a few gaps for critters and "fresh-air" to get it. I didn't tell Angie but when I first went in there was a cockroach which must have been 3 inches long...right in the sink! The rest of the room had a feeling as though it had been slapped together for the holiday season. The bummer was that the room wasn't too cheap...fortunately we only booked it for two days so we happily checked out following our second night.
Sawyer and I took a snorkeling trip to an island called Ko Rok. We've posted a picture of a tsumani warning sign. We were actully on Ko Lanta for the anniversary of the 2004 tsumani...hard to belive that such tragedy hit this area such a relatively short time ago.
While Sawyer and I were goofing off, Angie walked along the beach checking out all the hotels in search of our redemption room. She found our little Shangri La in a hotel called Twin Lotus. It's pretty amazing as staff in golf carts pick you up everywhere to deliver you to your destination on the hotel grounds. Upon checking in, they had three attendants at our front door to give us foot massages and had drawn a huge hot-tub complete with floating flower petals. Enough about that but just to know that Angie booked us here for three nights...it's all good!
We spend today on a tour of a jungle area just outside the Ko Lanta National Marine park. Oh yea...the tour was via elephant. Angie and I were feeling so good about our riding skills that we decided to ride bare back...or bare-neck as it were. The ride ended in an area which then allowed for about a 1.5 mile hike to the Klong Jark waterfall. It was surprisingly cool during the jungle hike. We heard many exotic bird calls, and the cicada chirps were deafening.
Tonight were headed to a Thai boxing match...be sure to check the blog tomorrow for some pictures of this spectacle.
